Understanding the operational environment is an important part of any offensive operation. This can be a daunting task during Computer Network Exploitation (CNE) and Computer Network Attack (CNA) operations because the target environment is often complex, abstract, and constantly changing. However, by consuming the output of common offensive tools and storing information in a normalized, graph-based database, it is possible to create a detailed map of the target environment that both humans and automated tools can efficiently leverage. This talk will discuss the challenges and benefits of mapping the operational environment, and will provide examples of how both offensive and defensive teams can leverage the resulting maps to increase their chances of success.

Bio: Trenton has been a technophile his entire life. After receiving a Bachelors, of Science Degree in Biology and Chemistry, he switched gears and pursued his lifelong passion for technology and information security. Now, he has been a security consultant and penetration tester for over seven years. In that time, Trenton has compromised (with permission) the networks and systems of clients ranging from small startups and local government to companies in the Fortune Global 500 list. These experiences enable Trenton to help his clients better understand their security weaknesses and strengths. Trenton currently helps lead the offensive research and development team at Secureworks, and is actively engaged in the information security community. Trenton has given talks at several conferences and events, including DerbyCon, Cyphercon, BSides (Chicago, Ashville, and Edinburgh), OWASP, InfraGard, and more.
