The purpose of the talk is to share some of my experiences in working within the public and private sector and to help small to medium sized businesses to get started with some basic controls to help monitor and defend their computer systems. I hope that by sharing some success stories, pitfalls, and some items to improve upon, it can help others to quickly get started with understanding and securing their systems if you are literally starting at ground zero with nothing. I am an IT manager for a small/medium sized medical practice. I have been professionally practicing in IT for ten years, but have been fascinated by computers since I was in grade school and able to grab a keyboard. There has always been something about the mystery of how these machines worked that has lead me to becoming a system/network administrator and to study information security. I am happily married seven years and celebrated my daughter's first birthday in August. My hobbies include technology, being in the outdoors, becoming a wanna-be prepper, and I have dusted off the ham radio as well.
