Eric Cowperthwaite was born in Sacramento, California and grew up in the surrounding area. Eric served in the Army for 11 years, including duty assignments along the "Iron Curtain" in Germany during the Cold War and combat service in Saudi Arabia and Iraq during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.Eric has more than 30 years experience as a Security practitioner and leader, including 10 years of experience in healthcare security, in both the delivery and insurance aspects of the field. Currently, Eric is the VP, Security & Strategy for Core Security. Prior to that, he was the Chief Information Security Officer, Providence Health & Services and System Director of Enterprise Risk Management. Eric has also served as the Information Security Officer for Medi-Cal, California,s Medicaid program. He worked for Electronic Data Systems in a variety of capacities, including working in the corporate security office, Network Services, Solution Architect, Security and Privacy Professional Services and as a Strategic Transformation Consulting leader.Eric has been asked to speak on security topics by a variety of organizations, including both the Federal and State of California Health & Human Services agencies, the Information Systems Security Association, CSO Magazine, the Department of Homeland Security, Alaska Homeland Security, the Society for Information Management, SecureWorld and SANS. Eric is a Computerworld Premier 100 IT Leaders honoree, the ISSA Security Professional of the Year in 2012 and a 2012 recipient of the CSO Magazine Compass Award.
