Magnetic Stripes 101 - Tyler Keeton GrrCON 2016 (Hacking Illustrated Series InfoSec Tutorial Videos)

Magnetic Stripes 101
Tyler Keeton
GrrCON 2016

This presentation will give the basics of how magnetic stripes are implemented, used, and read in POS systems as well as various other readers. It will show how easy it is to write/manipulate magnetic stripe data as well as demonstrate the ease of exploitation on various forms of cards such as student I.D's (from a somewhat famous Michigan school), debit cards, and possibly hotel key cards. It will feasibly show the nitty gritty science behind EM wave transmissions and how to manipulate wave data as well as demonstrate how old and out of date the magnetic stripe security is.
