The Changing Landscape of Cyber Security and Training the New Generation of Cyber Warriors - Sanjay Goel (ANYCon 2017 Videos) (Hacking Illustrated Series InfoSec Tutorial Videos)

The Changing Landscape of Cyber Security and Training the New Generation of Cyber Warriors
Sanjay Goel

ANYCon 2017

Security has been a perpetual problem ever since the creation of the Internet. We continue to make strides in improving security infrastructure; however, any gains in improving security technologies are quickly mitigated by advances in the abilities of hackers; resulting in a constant game of catch-up. Part of the problem is the constantly changing technological landscape; changing threat actors (and motivations), new innovations, and perpetual updates to existing technologies. The security paradigm has taken a fundamental shift from perimeter and layered defense to resilience, visibility into networks, and incident response. While most security decisions are based on standards that reflect past events, the shifting security environment can render security investments futile. As we continue to work on the unsolved security problems, we need to be cognizant of this changing landscape. We need to project the threat landscape into the future, and in so doing change the security paradigm to move beyond the sense of frustration and futility.
There is a global shortage of talent for addressing the cyber security workforce needs. Not only do we need to train new people, but cybersecurity education also needs a paradigm shift that reflects the changes in security needs and its evolution. There are novel innovations in pedagogy as well that can be leveraged for cybersecurity education; UAlbany is at the forefront of innovation in cyber education as well as in advancing the emerging field of digital forensics.  In this talk, we discuss the genesis of cyber conflicts, how they are evolving over time, and new vulnerabilities on the horizon. We also discuss the growth in demand for cybersecurity professionals, and new innovations in cybersecurity education.
