Several schools have begun to develop information security (though they have several names) programs. The programs can teach students a wide array of topics, but they are usually limited by perceptions of what is needed in an information security program. The job market is rapidly expanding in the infosec, but the lack of experience limits graduates from taking advantage of this expansion. This talk is a call for the major and minor players in information security to come together and create a standard for education in information security. With this standard, schools could have the infosec programs certified. This would also give professor leverage to ask for budgets for virtual networks, etc. Also, the standard could emphasis the skills needed before starting a career, and it would allow flexibility in the skills that can be taught later.

Shawn Jordan is a recent graduate of Marshall University,s Digital Forensics and Information Assurance program. He is the co-creator of Network Scout, and he has given talks at DerbyCon, AIDE, and Hack3rCon. He is working on several other projects - including contributing to a book.
