Identity Theft: Who's in YOUR Wallet?

This presentation takes a look inside the dark world of identity theft. We will discuss who has been a victim of this 200+ billion dollar a year crime and about some of the tools used by these fraudsters. I will conclude by discussing how to prevent identity theft and what to do if you become a victim. 1) First we will take a look who’s been a victim of ID Theft? Such celebrities as Oprah, George Lucas and business luminaries such as Warren Buffet, Michael Bloomberg, Paul Allen and yes, even Bill Gates. 2) We will look at some individuals and organizations that are active in the identity theft arena. We will also talk about some new entrants into the field. 3) We will think discuss how identify thieves work and some of the techniques they use: Phishing, Dumpster Diving, Pre-texting, Hacking, Botnets, recruitment scams, Smishing, Wireless hacking, Skimming. 4) Lastly, we will discuss techniques for stopping identify theft and what do when they have your information. Richard R. Starnes- A results-driven, information security and law enforcement professional with twenty-five years’ experience. He has served in executive and senior management positions, in the US and the UK. Served as Chairperson of the Communications and Public Relations Project Group of Interpol’s European Working Party on Information Technology Crime, as well as advising their Wireless Applications Security Project Group. In addition, he is formerly the President of the United Kingdom chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), previously President of ISSA of the Bluegrass and has sat on the editorial advisory board of the ISSA Journal and SC Magazine UK. Lastly, he holds a Master of Science in Information Security from Royal Holloway, University of London and formerly a senior instructor for the (ISC)² CISSP CBK seminar. Rick Nord – Rick has been with the USSS since February 2000 and was originally assigned to the Washington Field Office. In 2004, Rick was re-assigned to the USSS Head Quarters where he served as a Critical Infrastructure Specialist. Since 2004, Rick has served as a technical security agent responsible for securing venues prior to a protectee’s arrival from various threats including explosive, fire / life / safety, structural and chemical / biological / radiological. From 2006 to 2008, Rick served as the USSS Counterintelligence Program Manager responsible for training agents and officers in order to assist in the prevention of adversaries obtaining information and / or access of USSS protective methodology. Rick joined the USSS Louisville Field Office in 2008 and is the coordinator of the KY Electronic Crimes.
