Planning and Executing a Red Team Engagement
Timothy Wright
BSides Columbus Ohio 2017

A red team engagement is more than a penetration test. This test measures the maturity of a security program as well as demonstrates the ability of the blue team to detect and respond to security events. A red team engagement can also help demonstrate how vulnerable specific aspects of the business may be to very specific targeted attacks. During this talk the presenter will outline how to plan, stage and execute a red team engagement. The presenter will also outline various tools that can be used to help the team be more effective during the engagement. Our discussion will focus on Cobalt Strike and several features of this framework that can be helpful to your red team including the beacon payload.

Tim is the current red team lead at American Electric Power. His team is responsible for performing penetration tests and red team engagements. He has over 20 years of IT experience which includes over 14 years of security experience. Prior to his work at AEP Tim was a member of the DHS / US CERT red team and performed various assessments for US Gov't agencies. Tim has also worked for the DoD and the US Air Force in various cyber security roles.
