Markets for Malware - Adam Hogan BSides Cleveland 2019 (Hacking Illustrated Series InfoSec Tutorial Videos)

Markets for Malware
Adam Hogan

@awhogan

While nation-state actors grab headlines for their sophistication, eCrime actors have been building a wildly profitable industry distributing trojans and ransomware. These threat actors not only develop new and more sophisticated malware but their businesses grow in sophistication and specialization. I'll discuss how threat intelligence on how these actors have changed their tools and tactics shows increasing specialization and trade and how these markets develop. Given the similarities to the development of other black markets we can expect these trends to continue. Examples include the distribution of TrickBot and the success of the Gandcrab ransomware, both of which demonstrate tremendous growth in the black market economy.

Adam Hogan is a Sales Engineering Manager for CrowdStrike. With 15 years in infosec he has worked as an intrusion analyst, security consultant and instructor before joining a sales team. He first broke into security by teaching himself the Snort IDS platform and is now grateful the community is large enough that he can easily learn from others. Adam's graduate studies were in Economics, though he abandoned teaching to return to the security industry. He currently lives near Columbus, Ohio.
