Decentralization For Security and Freedom: A Discussion of Asymmetric and Decentralized Technologies - Tom Pieragastini Bsides Cleveland 2017 (Hacking Illustrated Series InfoSec Tutorial Videos)

Decentralization For Security and Freedom: A Discussion of Asymmetric and Decentralized Technologies
Tom Pieragastini

The centralization of the internet in the hands of large telecommunications companies, ISPs and service providers (Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.) has created conditions that facilitate the regulation of the internet, the censorship of content, the erosion of net neutrality and the surveillance of communications. This has created a situation in which one of the greatest mechanisms ever created for free speech and political autonomy has also become a tool of intelligence gathering and political repression. This discussion will center around technologies that have been developed which allow for the decentralization of internet usage and service hosting, the utilization of temporary and ephemeral services and the construction of alternative networks of communication outside of the traditional large internet network based on a large centralized server-client model.

The Digital Freedom Initiative is a Cleveland based organization dedicated to preserving and expanding freedom, security, creativity and transparency in the digital world and beyond. DFI is an affiliate of the Electronic Frontier Alliance, a local organizing network facilitated by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
