Geeks Need Basements! - Kathleen Veach Derbycon 2015 (Hacking Illustrated Series InfoSec Tutorial Videos)

Geeks Need Basements!
Kathleen Veach
Derbycon 2015

Whenever I am approached by someone looking to get into the computer security field, my advice to them is "build yourself a lab". Anyone interested in pursuing employment in the computer industry must have extensive hands-on experience with both hardware and software to be successful. This is especially true when it comes to IT Security. The old story is that leaders in the early days of the computer industry got started by fiddling with computers in their parent's basements. The purpose of this talk is to show how to construct a ‰ÛÏbasement‰Û on a laptop.

Ms. Veach (kathax) has been working in the computer industry since 1982. Starting as a Field Service Engineer with Digital Equipment Corporation, she has gone on to be a Systems Administrator, Wide Area Network Engineer and IT Security Analyst. For the last 15 years, she has focused on Cyber Security and has worked at numerous US Federal Agencies, including NASA, Library of Congress, Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Labor. She has attained several industry recognized certifications, including MCSE, CCNA, CISSP, CAP and CEH.
