Evolving the Noise out InfoSec using Law Enforcement Paradigms
Charles Herring
@charlesherring

Enterprise Security Operation Centers (SOC) receive thousands to millions of security events per day. These volumes of traffic force responders to triage what work is performed leaving most events uninvestigated. Since the beginning of 2016, research has been conducted in conjunction with Higher Education, Law Enforcement, and Enterprise SOC’s to develop methodologies to evolve events into higher level knowledge using paradigms and models borrowed from physical Law Enforcement. In this session, the theory and practice of evolving security events will be explained. Data from production networks in Public and Private sector will be reviewed in this session. This session includes a demonstration of code.

By day, Charles Herring is a Cyber Security Specialist at Cisco. In his free time, he leads the WitFoo project dedicated to finding ways to improve security operations. Charles spent 10 years on active duty with the US Navy. His last position in the Navy was as the Network Security Officer for the Naval Postgraduate School. After leaving the Navy, he spent six years consulting with the Federal government as well as serving as a contributing network security product reviewer for the InfoWorld Test Center.
