Call of Duty: Crypto Ransomware - Brett Hawkins @hawkbluedevil Bsides Cleveland 2015 (Hacking Illustrated Series InfoSec Tutorial Videos)

Call of Duty: Crypto Ransomware
Brett Hawkins @hawkbluedevil

It is an ongoing war defending and recovering from crypto ransomware. As one variant goes away, a newer variant appears. Crypto ransomware first appeared in late 2013, and has still managed to stick around. No matter which variant has been released, they all have a common goal to encrypt your files, making them unusable and demanding payment to fix them. In this talk, you will learn about crypto ransomware behavior, how to defend against and respond to the ransomware, and how the cyber criminals are making money from the ransomware. You will also learn about the history of crypto ransomware, starting with CryptoLocker in late 2013.

I am a Security Analyst in the private sector for a Fortune 500 company in Northeast Ohio. I possess industry recognized security certifications (CEH, GSEC), and am currently enrolled in the Cybersecurity Engineering Graduate Certificate Program at SANS. I am also a member of the Northeast Ohio Chapter of InfraGard. I have extensive knowledge in a breadth of different areas in Information Security. I have knowledge of the controls needed to help defend against crypto ransomware, and developed an incident response plan to respond to crypto ransomware incidents. When not at my day job, I enjoy doing my own security research, playing sports, and playing video games.
